A smooth riff on the classic Manhattan—balanced with Grand Marnier and an aromatic orange twist

If there’s one cocktail I keep coming back to, it’s the Manhattan—strong, smooth, and always reliable. But sometimes, I like to change it up just enough to make it feel special without overcomplicating it. That’s how the Grand Manhattan came to be.

This version is a subtle but elegant twist on the classic. Instead of sticking with the usual formula of whiskey, vermouth, and bitters, I add a splash of Grand Marnier, a French orange liqueur made with cognac. The result is a cocktail that still hits all the same notes as a Manhattan but with a slightly richer mouthfeel and a gentle citrus warmth.

What I love about this drink is that it doesn’t require top-shelf rye or bourbon to taste great. In fact, it’s ideal when you want to enjoy a well-balanced cocktail using what you already have in your cabinet. The Grand Marnier adds just enough complexity to smooth out the rough edges and elevate everything else in the glass.

I like mine stirred and served over a large ice cube in a rock glass with a twist of orange peel to enhance the aromatics. But if you’re feeling more fanct, it’s also great strait up in a coupe glass. It’s the kind of cocktail that works equally well for slow sipping on a quiet evening or making a few for friends when you’re hosting.

So if you’re looking to make your go-to Manhattan feel just a little more elevated, give this one a try. It’s classic, simple, and delicious—with just enough personality to stand out.
